The Smurf attack is a type of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. It got its name from the Smurf malware used to run it. Its goal is to take down computer networks to make their resources unavailable to legitimate users. It makes use of a flaw in the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP).
We divide DDoS Smurf attacks into two types. The Basic entails flooding a network with ping packets containing a faked IP address for the victim. The Advanced has a similar appearance. It can spoof the IP addresses of packets so that the response can be sent to many targets.
